Rope Mill duathlon

Had a pretty good race last Saturday at the Rope Mill offroad duathlon.  It was a bike-run-bike format.  I've been feeling a little sluggish lately and am about 8 lbs over race-weight so I was surprised to see that I set PRs on the course.  I frankly felt terrible on the run. I had a light breakfast of Kind bar and coconut oil.  I usually do pretty well on this course and it is really Singlespeed friendly.  Was shocked to see that Garmin reported the race as having 1500 feet of elevation.
I had a quick start and was in 3rd for a long time on The Mill trail then finally some geared-fasties started to overtake me.  My legs were on fire on the climbs.  Dylan Reach passed me on the loop somewhere but I didn't remember seeing another one-gear bike :) He took the Singlespeed win.  We placed 5th and 6th overall respectively.

I suspect that I still may be recovering from the 70.3  I did on Sept. 27th and months of training.
My transition was decent but bobbled with the right run shoe a bit.  Explorer loop is normally easy for me but it was ghastly on Saturday!  Turns out I beat my previous year's time by 2 minutes!
Was glad to be done with the run and had a clunky transition back to bike and inexplicably took my gloves off for the bike?? Ran too long before mounting on bike.  Was super-pleased to clean the uphill, rocky switchback heading in to Avalanche.  On the 1st downhill switchback section, my front wheel washed out and I went down hard on my right knee and shoulder. I think this ended up costing me first place as I feel I could have caught Dylan on Avalanche at the end.  Had a pretty good Bike 2 though I didn't feel fast at all yet ended up setting another PR.  It's a tough day to set PRs and come in 2nd!

Overall I'm pleased with my effort but not with the result. But at least I had fun and got to share it with Renee.  Renee was running the race so it was nice to pass her on the run and give a high-five on the Explorer bridge.

Dilemma for bad-assery

It's been a long year of hard training and racing, both on the bike and trail running.  Mentally I feel like a need a break at this point although I trained 39 hours in November, my 2nd highest total of the year and most of those hours were of high quality. Physically, I feel pretty fresh still.  I feel as though I could just train year around but know that I need some sort of rest period for next year's race season.  My training has remained fresh in part because I attained a road bike, which I've ridden about 12 hours so far.  It's been a huge boon to my training although I still need to get a proper bike fit done to alleviate neck and knee pain. The training book I'm reading recommends to take a 2-4 week Transition period to let my body and mind recover before moving on to next year's Base phase.  Question I'm pondering is when do I begin my Transition period...I feel like I'm in a great groove right now and I'd like to build up my Lactate thresh...

Day 3 and 4

Day 3 - hunger relatively in control. alcohol cravings declining Day 4 - thought of grain/cereal making me slightly sick at breakfast. thought about fasting until 3pm today but Renee made a delicious quiche for bfast. full after chicken salad.

MAF test results

MAF test #1 at Boling Park 8/6/16 Humid and warm. Went over 145 several times and up to 147.  Average was 143, 144, 144 for each mile. 1-mile intervals were 8:54, 10:24, 11:34 I found it difficult to stay below 146 and was surprised how often my HR alert went off. Breakfast was larabar, half kindbar, coconut oil. MAF test #2 at Boling Park 11/19/16 14-week interval Factors: Living with my 3 month old precious infant daughter for the past 3 months! Poor sleep and 30 mph headwinds.Temps in 60s.   MCT oil and egg ham muffins for bfast HR strap would not wake up until 2nd mile so I took miles 2,3,4 for the test HR went up to 147 and 148 several times and it was difficult to keep it at 145 but I am not going to adjust my times due to the headwinds, which pretty much evens everything out or close enough. 1-mile intervals 8:18, 8:45,8:49,8:57 HR per lap 143, 146, 146, 146 Note, my HR strap didn’t work until after the 1st half-mile so I’m ...
